Change is on the horizon
Southwest Airlines is set to implement significant changes to its baggage policy, marking a departure from its long-standing “Bags Fly Free” tradition. Effective May 28, 2025, the airline will begin charging for checked luggage on most flights,
Starting May 28, 2025, the new baggage policy will be as follows:
- Business Select passengers and A-List Preferred members: Two free checked bags.
- A-List members and Rapid Rewards credit cardholders: One free checked bag.
- All other passengers: Fees for checked luggage will apply.
While the exact fee amounts have not been disclosed, industry analysts anticipate charges similar to those of major competitors, which typically start at $35 per bag .

Introduction of Basic Economy Fare
In conjunction with the baggage policy change, Southwest is introducing a new “Basic” fare class, effective May 28, 2025. This fare tier, which replaces the “Wanna Get Away” category, offers lower ticket prices but comes with increased restrictions. Notably, Basic fares will not be refundable, will not allow itinerary changes, and will not permit same-day standby options.

Also on the horizon, for later in 2025 or early 2026, assigned seating. They are doing away with boarding zones and going the more traditional route, used by just about every other carrier in the industry. This can be a huge money maker for them. Some customers are willing to pay extra for premium seating, and Southwest has been missing out on that revenue for a long time. Not anymore.
Only time will tell how these changes affect Southwest’s brand identity and customer loyalty.
