Do you need to scramble to the DMV? Maybe not

May 7 has finally arrived. Beginning today, you will need a Real ID compliant driver’s license. (By now, you know what it is so I won’t bore you with the details). It is needed to pass through security when flying within the United States. In actuality, you just need valid proof of identification from the list of acceptable options. What does that mean?
The TSA has a laundry list of documents that you can use when traveling. They include a valid passport, a US passport card, DHS Trusted Traveler Cards (NEXUS, SENTRI, Global Entry, etc), Boarder Crossing card and many more. Most travelers will have something on the list that they can use if their license isn’t a Real ID. So don’t panic.

It is advisable, though, to get your driver’s license adjusted so your travels will be a bit easier. If you’re flying to Denver for a wedding, for example, do you really want to have to carry your passport? You can, but what a pain that would be.
If you are unsure if you have the Real ID or not, take a look at your license. Does it have a gold star in the upper right corner? If so, then you’re good to go. If not, you’ll need to check with your state’s DMV. Find out what paperwork is needed to get one. Believe it or not, the Real ID is handled at certain AAA locations as well. This includes select branches in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. It may be worth a call if you are a member to see if they can help.
Bottom line: it’s time for the Real ID to travel domestically. Take a moment and check your license. Make sure you are travel ready. It will save you a huge headache at the airport!
