Maximizing Chase Card Approval Odds: Free Credit Score Verification

Chase has rules about approvals. It’s free and easy to verify where you stand

We have talked about this in the podcast, but with the new Chase Sapphire Reserve and Chase Sapphire Preferred bonus offers floating around (as of this posting date), now is a good time to review how to see your open credit cards and how long they have been active.

CreditKarma.com, and Intuit product, allows you to review your credit scores and accounts for free, once per week. This is a great tool to keep an eye on what is happening with your credit, what accounts are open and to verify there is nothing fishy going on.

First, you’ll need to create an account. Easy peasy. It will then pull your credit profile. This will show you your credit score with TransUnion and Equifax.

Click on one of the scores showing. It will bring up a host of information, including credit factors, total accounts and credit age. This is the one we want to review, although all of it is good information.

Select “credit age” and it will show you your average age of open accounts. That part is important to your overall score, but not what we’re looking for now.

When you scroll down to the list of credit cards, you’ll see them listed by bank, oldest to newest. Scroll down to see the most recent cards. Check to see if any have been opened within the last 2 years. Remember, you’ll need to be UNDER 5/24 to get a new Chase card!

There is one catch-Chase counts accounts that have been closed. To check this, go to the top bar and select “Credit”, then “Accounts”.

This will show you all the accounts you closed, so make sure nothing has been closed in the last 2 years. If so, click on the card and review when that card was opened. Fingers crossed it was more than 2 years ago!

Now not only can you check your Chase “status” for opening a new card, but you can keep an eye on your credit report. This is always a good idea, even if you don’t plan on opening any new cards soon.
