Hotel Safety Tips

Make Your Next Trip Safer

Let’s be honest—when we check into a hotel, most of us are thinking about fluffy pillows, that first dive onto the bed, or maybe the poolside cocktail waiting downstairs. The last thing on our minds? Safety. But here’s the truth: taking a few simple precautions can make your stay way more relaxing. And the good news is—it’s not hard at all.

Do a Little Homework Before You Book

I know, I know—reading reviews isn’t the most exciting part of trip planning. But trust me, it pays off. Don’t just skim for “clean rooms” and “great breakfast.” Look for mentions of safety: secure entrances, well-lit hallways, maybe even 24-hour staff. If guests say they felt uneasy, that’s a red flag. Also make sure the review is written by someone with a lengthy posting history. If they’ve only written 1 review, it’s probably a bot.

The “Sweet Spot” Room Location

Pro tip: skip the ground floor (too easy for break-ins) and also avoid super-high floors (harder to escape in an emergency). The “golden zone” is usually somewhere between the 3rd and 6th floors—safe but still reachable by fire ladders if needed.

Shhh… Keep Your Room Number Quiet

If the front desk announces your room number like it’s a lottery win, don’t be shy—ask for a new one. And maybe don’t tell the whole lobby you’re in 312. (Yes, that includes posting it on Instagram. “Room goals” can wait until you’ve checked out!)

Use Those Locks

This one’s simple but often skipped. Once you’re in, flip the deadbolt and the latch. Done. Extra peace of mind for basically zero effort. Added bonus-bring portable locks (tons on Amazon).

Valuables? Think Smart

Sure, the hotel safe is handy—but they’re not Fort Knox. I usually stash my passport and cards locked in my suitcase. It’s just one of those “better safe than sorry” things.

Public Spaces Are Just That—Public

It’s easy to let your guard down in the hotel gym or by the pool, but keep an eye on your stuff. If you wouldn’t leave your phone sitting out in a coffee shop, don’t leave it on a lounge chair while you grab a towel.

Know the Exits (Without Being Weird About It)

When you get to your room, take a quick peek at the map on the back of the door. Maybe even do a little walk to find the nearest exit. You don’t have to make it a big production—just enough so you’d know where to go if the alarms went off at 2 a.m.

Tech Can Help—But Stay Sharp

Digital room keys are awesome (no more losing the card in your wallet abyss). Just remember to use the official hotel app and avoid sketchy Wi-Fi networks with names like “FreeHotelWiFi123.” Even better, when you connect to the hotel internet, use a VPN.

Listen to Your Gut

If someone knocks and says “housekeeping” but you’re not expecting anyone, call the front desk before opening. If a hallway feels off, trust that instinct. If someone gets off the elevator on the same floor as you, stop and tie your shoe or pretend to make a call. Let them move along so they are not watching which room you go in. You’re not being dramatic—you’re being smart.

Relax—That’s the Point

At the end of the day, hotel safety isn’t about paranoia. It’s about giving yourself peace of mind so you can actually enjoy that rooftop cocktail, morning coffee, or the 12 pillows you piled up on the bed. A few easy habits, and you’re set.
